About
Born on 23 August 1974 in Portsmouth, England, Sam Davies comes from a seafaring family. Her grandfather was a submarine commander. She learned to walk aboard her parents' boat as they regularly crossed the Channel on their way to Brittany. An accomplished sportswoman, Sam enjoys swimming, running, cycling, yoga, and pilates. An engineering graduate from Cambridge University, Sam began her career in competitive sailing at the age of 24, with a first round-the-world team race in the 1998 Jules Verne Trophy. In 2001 Sam arrived in France to prepare for the Mini-Transat, her first major solo race. Then, she quickly launched herself in Figaro and settled in Port La Forêt. She gained several years of experience in ocean racing, finishing 4th in a splendid Vendée Globe in 2004, which made her known to the general public. With a cheerful character, Sam loves sailing more than anything else. She never hesitates to share her passion with the public, as evidenced by the funny and sometimes crazy videos she sends out at each race. In 2014 Sam tried her hand at crewing, becoming skipper of an all-female yacht in the VOLVO Ocean Race. A commitment to women's sailing that she continues to champion today with the Magenta Project. Tanguy de Lamotte then signed her for the 2015 Transat Jacques Vabre deciding, with the support of the sponsors, to hand over to her the helm of IMOCA INITIATIVES CŒUR officially in 2017 with the mission of continuing to improve the sporting level of the project. Perfectionist and persevering, Sam loves speed, giving her all in every competition. She never forgets that she is also competing to save children. So much so that she was keen to finish her Vendée Globe 2020 in spite of having to abandon the race, in order to continue to spread the word about the project on social networks. His commitment enabled 103 children to undergo heart surgery.
