The Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe is also all about the atmosphere, with millions of people coming together in the villages for the events at the start and finish. Keen enthusiasts, fans and those wanting to get a close look are brought together, as they admire these exceptional men and women.
The Region of Brittany and the City of Privateers will be able to enjoy the sight of the sailors preparing to tackle the ocean, while the Region of Guadeloupe and the port of Pointe-à-Pitre will enjoy celebrating the achievement of those who manage to reach the other side of the Atlantic.
SAINT-MALO
A historic Breton city built between the seventeenth and eighteenth Century, Saint-Malo stands out because of the beauty and riches of its architectural and environmental heritage, while managing to keep its authenticity.
The city that has always been outward-looking and expressed its passionate association with the sea throughout the past has historically been the location for the start of the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe since competitors first took part back in 1978. A place associated with great navigators, explorers and discoverers, as well as privateers, Cape Horners, fishermen and famous ocean racers, the City of Privateers has carried out an active policy to support its culture hosting major sailing events for more than four decades.
The Breton port always enjoys seeing lovers of the open seas and freedom head for the ramparts giving the walled town and the harbourside that unique and unrivalled atmosphere. On the one hand, there are the crowds, but at the same time a very close, intimate relationship with the men and women as they get ready to line up for the start of one of the finest solo sailing events.
Saint-Malo has expressed 44 years of unconditional support for this race as it shares this history which always leaves so many memories in its wake.
Village de Saint-Malo
The Village in Saint-Malo
Dates: from 25th October to 6th November 2022
Entry to the village is unrestricted and free of charge.
All in the same dock!
A major new feature: the Ultim boats – the giants of the sea – had until now found it hard to moor up in the docks in Saint-Malo due to their size. They were previously forced to moor up outside the harbour near the Ferry terminal.
In 2022, they will be joining the rest of the fleet in the Vauban and Duguay-Trouin docks. All of the boats will therefore be grouped together along the famous race quays close to the walled city and the Palais du Grand Large congress centre.
Parades in Saint-Malo to see the boats
Another new feature for 2022 is that during the first week it is open, the village will offer visitors the chance to see boats sailing and not just on the day of the start. Off the ramparts of the City of Saint-Malo, each class will have its own day dedicated to a parade, so that the general public will be able to discover the whole of the fleet. An exciting week to complement the atmosphere during this period with everything else that is going on. At the finish, the competitors will once again engage in this type of parade with the backdrop of the incredible panorama of the islands of Guadeloupe.
