About

It's with great pleasure that I return to this legendary transatlantic race with a legendary boat. Many memories, many emotions. In 1978, at the age of 24, on Pen Duick III, renamed St Malo Pointe à Pitre, it was my first solo transatlantic race and I finished 7th with a technical stop in the Azores. In 1982, I lost half my rudder a few days after the start. I finished 9th, but my arms felt like they had doubled in size, the boat was unbearable... In 1986, I lost a friend, my direct competitor, in a storm. I finished 48 hours ahead of the runner-up. It was an emotional, joyful and sad moment. In 1990, I finished second behind Florence. The little fiancée of the Atlantic became Queen. She was the strongest. Hats off to her, Madame. Apart from these Routes du Rhum, I won the Solitaire du Figaro three times and 2 times the Ostar (English solo transatlantic race), an Atlantic record, the Discovery Route, & raced around Cape Horn several times. For fifteen years I have travelled the world from the North Pole to the South Pole, with my family, to talk about the sea and the importance of protecting it. I am as proud of this journey from one Pole to the other as I am of my journey as a runner. The idea of doing the Route du Rhum came from the script and the film that my wife Géraldine Danon is going to make about the life of Florence. For the film we bought the former Pierre 1er. As the Route du Rhum -Destination Guadeloupe takes place in November, we thought why not do it. A beautiful tribute to Florence.
